5 Must-Read Vegan Food Blogs

Although I don’t follow any particular diet or eating style strictly, I would say about 95% of my meals tend to be vegan. Vegan eating means choosing foods that don’t contain any animal products including meat, eggs and dairy. That may seem like a challenge but I can promise you that with blogs like the ones mentioned here preparing vegan meals is as easy as it is nutritious and delicious!

There are a lot of benefits to choosing vegan meals. The first, of course, is the well-being of animals. Although there are small, family-owned farms where animals are naturally raised and treated more humanely, the majority of grocery store meat, dairy and eggs come from factory farms where animals are kept in terrible conditions throughout their lives. Eliminating or reducing your meat consumption and switching to meat from small, local, organic farms when you do choose to consume it is a great wait to fight this.

Additionally, although meat has its nutritional benefits, the standard North American diet focuses very heavily on it while ignoring many other foods such as legumes, nuts and seeds that are regularly used in vegan meals and offer a whole host of crucial vitamins and minerals. Replacing some of your typical meals with vegan meals is a great way to achieve a more well-rounded diet.

And the final big pro for veganism is the fact it is estimated that a person who follows a vegan diet will produce 50% less CO2 and use 1/11th of the oil and 1/13th the water of a meat eater. So when you choose vegan meals you can be doing a great service to the environment.

All this isn’t to say you have to go 100% vegan today to help animals, improve your health and decrease the burden on the environment. But choosing vegan meals when you can is a great way to contribute to all of these goals. Plus it’s fun and delicious!

Whether you are currently vegan, would like to go vegan or simply want to include more animal product-free meals into your repertoire, these vegan food blogs have you covered. They have everything from savoury main dishes to egg-free and dairy-free baked goods. I’ve been following all of them for years now and have tried so many of their great recipes. I know you’ll find lots of yummy vegan creations on each site that will catch your eye and can’t wait to hear what you whip up!

1. Oh She Glows

Very likely one of the best-known vegan blogs and one I’ve had the pleasure of following for years has to be Oh She Glows. Angela’s recipes are always the perfect blend of exciting but not overly complicated. Most of them are incredibly easy while also bursting with flavour to satisfy even the most carnivorous eater. She also came out with a cookbook that has more recipes I’m dying to try than any other cookbook I’ve ever read, and she just released another one I can’t wait to check out. Oh She Glows is the perfect place to start your vegan food blog journey.

My fave: Picking a favourite from among all of Angela’s incredible creations is ridiculously hard but I have to say this smoky vegan butternut squash pasta and greens is too amazing not to try.

When you don’t want to fuss with complicated ingredients, Brandi at The Vegan 8 is your girl. All of her recipes use 8 ingredients or less. Plus, everything she creates is also oil-free and mostly gluten-free so if you’re sensitive to either of those you’ll be in good hands.

My fave: This one-pot 30-minute Mexican chili is ridiculously easy and so satiating. (Update: This particular chili pictured here is no longer on her website, but she has many other yummy-looking chili recipes like this one!)

In addition to being a fabulous recipe creator, Gena at The Full Helping is a certified nutritionist. Although she shares great, nutrient-rich recipes, what I love most about her blog is her love of science and her open honesty. Each weekend she rounds up some great vegan recipes from around the blogosphere as well as news articles about nutrition, studies, animals rights, etc. They’re always very interesting reads and her insights are thoughtful and smart. She also regularly talks about her recovery from an eating disorder and shares her valuable insights into making peace with food, body acceptance and self love.

My fave: If you’ve never used five-spice powder before you should definitely give it a whirl in this creamy butternut squash and five-spice soup.

5. Minimalist Baker

Although not all of the recipes at Minimalist Baker are vegan, the majority are and because of what a huge help those recipes have been to me, I couldn’t possibly leave it off this list. Because of my food allergies, store-bought baked goods are off the menu. Although I’m fine with that for the most part and now rarely crave baked treats, when I do get a hankering, it tends to be Dana at Minimalist Baker to the rescue. If you need some vegan treats in your life, STAT, check out Dana’s blog. Many of her recipes are also gluten-free so, whatever your allergies, there will be something for you!

My fave: These vegan funfetti cupcakes made my birthday extra special this year and are definitely worth trying. Or if you’re looking for something healthier, check out this one-bowl gluten-free banana bread.
